Converting Farish Mk 1s into a 4-CEP
There are three sections to the baseboard section and, for ease of navigation, a link to each of the three pages is listed below:-
:: Rolling Stock
:: Building a TPM 4-CEP conversion
kit
:: Taylor Precision Models Commonwealth Bogies
One of the main requirements I have for rolling stock on my layout is 3rd rail EMUs. No-one makes them in a Ready-To-Run format so that means making them myself.
There's a number of ways of doing that at the moment. BHE do a complete kit that needs assembling and motorising. Amsies Models are about to release a conversion kit and Taylor Precision Models do an etched side conversion kit and, most importantly from my point of view, a conversion kit for old style inlay variety Farish Mk 1s.
On this page I will detail how I build this kit but, in the meantime, here's some photos of what I have done so far (each photo can be viewed in full size on a separate page - just click on the photo to view the larger image):-
A photo of a Mk 1 with
the inlay removed that shows the lip that needs to be removed
before a new inlay can be inserted |
This photo shows the
support struts that will need to be trimmed so that they don't
show through the new inlay's windows |
This photo shows one
of the new DMBSO inlays fitted but not yet trimmed to length |
And here is the new DMBSO
inlay fitted to the opposite side of the donor Mk 1 that can
be seen in the previous photo |
In this photo, a new
TSO inlay has been fitted |
This is a close-up shot
of the previous photo that shows that little trimming of the
support struts will need to be done for this new inlay |
